BMW, once hailed for its sleek and sophisticated designs, seems to have taken a detour into the realm of questionable aesthetics. 

From the 4 series to the iX, and from the new X2 to the XM, there’s a consensus brewing that BMW’s latest design choices are, to put it bluntly, quite hideous.

The BMW iX: Beauty is More Than Skin Deep

Let’s start with the iX. Sales figures might hint at a collective nod of disapproval from the public, and it’s not hard to see why. 

While the interior boasts commendable craftsmanship, the exterior falls flat

The front, in particular, has garnered comparisons to an angry beaver. One can’t help but wonder what went through BMW’s design team’s minds when they birthed this peculiar facade.

The XM: A Mixed Bag of Design Quirks

Enter the XM, BMW’s supposed halo car, positioned to dazzle and captivate enthusiasts with its blend of performance, luxury, and cutting-edge design. 

However, reality paints a different picture—one of missed opportunities and unfulfilled promises.

A Halo Car in Theory, But Not in Practice

Traditionally, a halo car embodies the pinnacle of a brand’s capabilities, serving as a shining beacon of excellence in performance, design, and innovation. 

Unfortunately for BMW, the XM falls short on multiple fronts, failing to live up to the lofty expectations set for a flagship model.

In the realm of performance, the XM struggles to assert itself as an unequivocal leader. 

Despite boasting fantastic power figures, it pales in comparison to its rivals in terms of sheer performance prowess. 

It lacks the blistering acceleration of its competitors, leaving speed enthusiasts yearning for more adrenaline-inducing thrills.

Regrettably, the XM falls short in this driving dynamics department as well. 

It lacks the finesse and engagement that define truly exceptional performance SUVs, leaving drivers feeling underwhelmed and disconnected from the road.

X2: The Double-Take Dilemma

The X2, at first glance, appears relatively harmless. 

However, as one’s gaze drifts towards the rear, a sense of disappointment begins to take hold. 

What was once a harmonious symphony of design elements devolves into a discordant cacophony of mismatched proportions and awkward angles.

The rear, with its abrupt truncation and disjointed aesthetic, stands in stark contrast to the X2’s otherwise cohesive exterior.

The new exterior rear of the X2 is the culprit behind this aesthetic dissonance. 

While the front of the vehicle exudes modernity and fluidity with its sleek lines and aerodynamic profile, the rear adopts a decidedly square-shaped design language. 

This abrupt departure from the organic curves and dynamic contours of the front end creates a visual disconnect that is impossible to ignore.

Exceptions or Temporary Reprieves?

Granted, the recently facelifted X5 and X6 still manage to hold onto some semblance of visual appeal

However, this seems more a result of cosmetic enhancements than a true reflection of BMW’s current design ethos. 

The looming question remains: how long until they succumb to the same fate as their less fortunate siblings?

BMW vs. Porsche: A Tale of Two Design Philosophies

In the world of automotive design, Porsche stands as a beacon of consistency and innovation. 

Unlike BMW, Porsche manages to refresh and redesign its models without losing their essence. Take the new Macan, for instance. 

It’s a testament to Porsche’s ability to evolve while staying true to its roots—a feat BMW seems to struggle with.

Beauty, Attention, and the Quest for Sales

BMW’s recent designs seem geared towards grabbing attention at any cost, even if it means sacrificing traditional notions of beauty and taste.

While this strategy may have its merits in garnering eyeballs, the dismal sales figures of models like the XM paint a different picture. 

Porsche, on the other hand, effortlessly blends attention-grabbing design with timeless appeal, evident in the continued success of the Cayenne.

The Neue Klasse Conundrum: Another Disaster from BMW’s design team.

As if to add insult to injury, BMW unveils its latest Neue Klasse prototype in SUV form, and it’s a visual mismatch. 

The attempt to marry heritage with modernity falls short, leaving enthusiasts pondering the direction BMW’s design language is headed.

In conclusion, BMW’s recent foray into design experimentation has left many enthusiasts scratching their heads. 

While some models manage to salvage a semblance of attractiveness, others fall prey to bizarre design choices. 

Only time will tell if BMW can regain its design mojo and reclaim its former glory in the automotive design arena.
