The GV80 is the first SUV from Genesis. The GV80 enters one of the most competitive markets, however, thanks to its well-made design, great towing capacity, and numerous safety features, it’s managing to sell well and it’s starting to become more noticeable around potential customers. If you want to find out what is the Genesis GV80 towing capacity, you’re at the right article, as we cover that below.
When it comes to SUVs, the towing capacity is often a crucial factor for many people. If you value it, I have good news for you, the Genesis GV80 has some serious towing capacity.
What’s the Genesis GV80 Towing Capacity?
The Genesis GV80 can tow up to 6,000 pounds. But how does it compare to its main competitors? Well, the BMW X5 xDrive40i has a towing capacity of 6,602 pounds, the Acura MDX can tow up to 5,000 pounds, and the Mercedes GLE 350 is rated to go up to 5,950 pounds.
Note that the Mercedes and BMW examples are the entry-level versions, however, we can’t really compare the GV80 against their higher trims because the price gap would be too big, and the engine differences would be too noticeable.

The Genesis GV80 positions itself as a more affordable premium SUV that offers decent towing capacity, without compromising its design. We are sure that if Genesis releases a full-size SUV in the future, it will likely get over 7,000 lbs of towing capacity.
Here’s a table comparing the GV80 against some of its competitors:
SUV | Towing Capacity |
Genesis GV80 | 6,000 |
BMW X5 XDrive40i | 6,602 |
Acura MDX | 5,000 |
Mercedes GLE 350 | 5,950 |
Kia Telluride | 5,000 |
All GV80 trims have the same towing capacity
Although the 2021 Genesis GV80 is available in three trims, 2.5T I4 RWD, 2.5T I4 AWD, and 3.5T V6 AWD, and there is a 75 hp difference between the entry-level and the higher-level trims, they all share the same towing capacity, 6,000 pounds.
Find below a table comparing the three Genesis GV80 trims:
Genesis GV80 | 2.5T I4 RWD | 2.5T I4 AWD | 3.5T V6 AWD |
MSRP | $48,900 | $54,650 | $59,650 |
Engine | 2.5-L Turbo inline 4 | 2.5-L Turbo inline 4 | 3.5-L Twin-Turbo V6 |
HP and Torque | 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque | 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque | 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque |
Towing Capacity | 6,000 pounds | 6,000 pounds | 6,000 pounds |

Genesis offers a Tow Kit
Even though the GV80 comes with all the necessary towing wiring, it will also require a tow hitch and a tow harness, thankfully, Genesis offers a tow kit (which includes the hitch and the harness) for all GV80 trims priced at $599,99.
If you purchase the Genesis GV80 Towing Kit, it’s recommended that it’s installed by your local Genesis dealer.
The 2021 GV80 is a complete SUV
As a mid-size luxury SUV, the Genesis GV80 ticks all the boxes, it’s offered at a competitive price, its design stands out from the competition, it’s well-made, its engine offering is great, and additionally, it comes with a phenomenal towing capacity.
It’s a matter of time until this SUV becomes a hit, and all it requires is some more branding from Genesis.
Right now, Genesis shares showrooms with Hyundai. In our opinion, this is a handicap, as Genesis is trying to establish itself as a premium brand that competes with others like Mercedes, or BMW. Having dedicated showrooms that exudes a tailor-made experience is critical in this segment, and Genesis needs to look into this.
To sum up, if you’re on the hunt for one of the hottest mid-size luxury SUVs in the market with a considerable towing capacity, the Genesis GV80 might be for you.
