What’s better? 2023 Porsche Macan GTS versus Turbo 2021

When Porsche unveiled the facelifted 2023 Macan GTS we wondered where did the Turbo version go, but then we looked at the specs and we realized that the new GTS was replacing the Turbo with an important upgrade that made the GTS quite interesting. But, which one is better? the 2023 Porsche Macan GTS versus Turbo 2021?

Before continuing, remember that the latest iteration of the Turbo came out in 2019, while the new GTS was released in 2021. 

This two years difference might not seem like much but when it comes to automakers like Porsche, they matter.

Porsche Macan GTS versus Turbo specs and price

Starting with the new GTS we find the same engine that the Turbo used to wear, a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with 434 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of torque.

When it comes to acceleration the GTS can go from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.3 seconds while the top speed is limited to 169 mph (272 km/h).

For the Turbo, as stated above, the engine, horsepower, torque, and acceleration are identical to the GTS, except that its top speed is slightly lower, 167 mph (269 km/h).

The Macan is available today at $86,800 (96,075€ in Europe and £71,700 in the UK), while the Turbo used to cost $84,600 (106,372€) new. If you want to get a Turbo today you will have to look for used ones.

The real changes are found in both the interior and the exterior design of the Macan.

Porsche Macan GTS versus Turbo design

For the exterior, the Porsche Macan GTS rocks the facelifted design which means sportier looks, which translates in this version into a new aggressive front bumper design, a side blade below the doors, and a new rear black diffuser.

The Macan Turbo looks more restrained, which for many that’s a good thing, especially when it comes to Porsches. 

However, something that many noticed in the pre-facelift models is the fact that they were hard to differentiate. The base Macan and the Turbo have too many things in common.

In terms of interior design, the GTS shows its strengths since it received the updated Porsche design which takes great inspiration from the Taycan. 

That means a cleaner and uncomplicated design that looks more actual.

Technology-wise the GTS is way superior with a 10.9-inch touch screen equipped with ApplePlay. The car comes standard with park assist and Lane Departure Warning.

The interior of the Macan Turbo still looks great today but you can tell its age. 

The only thing we appreciate more is the fact that it doesn’t fill the center console with haptic touch elements which can become a distraction when driving.

Macan GTS vs Turbo: Which one is better?

There is no doubt that the new Porsche Macan GTS is the superior car, it does everything better than the Turbo and for an almost identical price.

They share the same engine and almost the same specs, but as stated above, the real differences are found in the design.

The new exterior might indeed turn some people off, as many customers appreciate restrained looks, but when you see a GTS at least you know from far away which model it is and that it’s a big deal.

A similar thing may happen with the interior where some customers would prefer the old looks and the lack of haptic touch elements, but there’s no doubt that the new interior design looks great.

Would there be a new Turbo model?

Porsche did a great job with the new GTS, but many wonder why they didn’t deliver a new Turbo version.

The reason is likely the upcoming electric Macan. Porsche has been testing it for a while, and some prototype pictures have been appearing online recently.

The Macan EV will likely shake the whole line-up completely, and many things that it may replace completely the Macan so it becomes the only electric model.

Whatever happens, we are sure that it will still be an impressive vehicle and a great option for those looking for a sporty SUV.
